Born in Stanley, County Durham, he joined the 8th Battalion DLI and, as a Lance Corporal, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in March 1916 - "When many NCO's had become casualties, and he was the only one left, he handled the men with great coolness and assisted in extricating the wounded under heavy shell and machine-gun fire from the enemy, whose trenches were only 70 yards distant".
He was killed in action, as a Sergeant, on the Butte de Warlencourt on 5 November 1916. He was 22 years old.
Alfred Beckwith has no known grave, but his name is recorded on the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval in France.
